Omeprazole capsules are medicines used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Omeprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It works by blocking the proton pump in the stomach lining, which is responsible for acid secretion.
The capsules usually contain enteric-coated pellets so that the medicine is protected from stomach acid and is released in the intestine, where it can be properly absorbed.
Omeprazole capsules are commonly prescribed for conditions related to excess stomach acid such as acid reflux (GERD), peptic ulcers, ZollingerEllison syndrome, and for the prevention of gastric ulcers caused by long-term use of painkillers like NSAIDs. They are also used in combination with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori infection.
The medicine helps in relieving symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation, stomach pain, and promotes healing of ulcers and inflammation of the food pipe (esophagitis). Omeprazole capsules are usually taken once daily before food, as advised by a doctor.
