Product Description
Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate is a widely used antibiotic combination. It's a powerful medication due to its dual action against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
What is it?
This medication combines two active ingredients:
- Amoxicillin: This is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria's survival. Without a proper cell wall, the bacteria burst and die (bactericidal action).
- Potassium Clavulanate (Clavulanic Acid): This is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Many bacteria have developed resistance to penicillin antibiotics like amoxicillin by producing enzymes called beta-lactamases. These enzymes break down the amoxicillin before it can act. Clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from being destroyed by these enzymes, allowing amoxicillin to effectively kill the bacteria. It has very little antibiotic activity on its own but is crucial in extending amoxicillin's spectrum of action.
This combination makes the antibiotic effective against a wider range of bacteria,
