Phenylephrine

Product Description

Phenylephrine is a medication primarily used as a decongestant and a vasopressor. It works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors, which causes blood vessels to constrict (narrow). This action reduces swelling in certain areas of the body and can increase blood pressure.

In India, phenylephrine is very commonly found in various forms, especially as an ingredient in combination medications.

Uses of Phenylephrine:

1. Nasal Decongestant: This is its most common over-the-counter (OTC) use.

   • Relieves nasal congestion: It helps clear a stuffy nose and sinus pressure by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and allowing for easier breathing.
   • Found in many cold and flu medications (often combined with antihistamines, pain relievers like paracetamol, cough suppressants, etc.).
   • Also available as nasal sprays for direct application.

2. Vasopressor (to increase blood pressure):

   • In hospital settings, phenylephrine injections are used to manage low blood pressure (hypotension), particularly during surgery or in critical care, when a rapid increase in blood pressure is needed.

3. Ophthalmic Uses (Eye Drops):

   • Used in eye drops to dilate pupils for eye examinations (e.g., before cataract surgery) or to relieve redness due to minor eye irritation by constricting superficial blood vessels.

4. Hemorrhoids:

   • Topical preparations (creams/ointments) containing phenylephrine are used to relieve discomfort, itching, and swelling associated with hemorrhoids.
