Description

Fosfomet Sachet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used mainly for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby killing the bacteria responsible for infection.

Indications

• Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI)

• Cystitis (bladder infection)

• Asymptomatic bacteriuria (especially in pregnancy, if prescribed)

• Recurrent UTI (as advised by doctor)

Mechanism of Action

Fosfomycin blocks an enzyme (MurA) involved in the first step of bacterial cell wall formation. This results in bacterial death.

Dosage & Administration

• Usually one 3 g sachet taken as a single dose

• Dissolve the contents in half a glass of water and take on an empty stomach (preferably at night after emptying the bladder)

Common Side Effects

• Nausea

• Diarrhea

• Headache

• Vaginal itching or discharge (rare)

Precautions

• Use with caution in kidney disease

• Complete the prescribed dose

• Not recommended for severe kidney infection (pyelonephritis)
